We had such wonderful feedback from our SEWN Mini Quilt Swap this spring that we’re excited to launch another modern mini quilt swap—this time in partnership with the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild and the Austin Modern Quilt Guild! This multi-guild collaboration is a fun way to connect with fellow modern quilters, explore new techniques, and create inspiring mini quilts to share.
SxSW Mini Quilt Swap Details
Timeline
- December: Complete the online sign-up form by December 15, 2025, to participate.
- January: Your assigned mini quilt swap partner will be announced.
- February & March: Design and sew your modern mini quilt. This is your time to experiment, sketch, select fabrics, and create something uniquely you.
- Your finished mini quilt should measure between 12″ x 12″ and 24″ x 24″
- April: Submit your finished mini quilt to your home guild by the April meeting. Each guild will mail two packages—one to each partner guild—on or before April 30, 2026.
Design Prompt: Transparency
This year’s creative prompt is transparency—a popular modern quilting technique. Transparency in quilting uses overlapping colors, gradients, and fabric choices to create the illusion of layered, see-through shapes. This effect adds visual depth, movement, and a dynamic, modern aesthetic to quilt designs.
Partner Matching
Participants will be matched 1:1 based on self-identified quilting skill level to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable swap experience.
- Beginner: New to quilting; learning foundational skills.
- Advanced Beginner: Familiar with basic techniques and ready to expand skills.
- Intermediate: Confident quilter with experience across several techniques.
- Expert: Highly experienced; comfortable with advanced methods and capable of teaching others.
